NSPM-33 Topics Covered

  • User using Computer

    Cybersecurity

As NSPM-33, the CHIPS Act, and other U.S. regulations and guidelines reference cybersecurity, research organizations should have basic cybersecurity hygiene and training programs.

This course explores some of the basics of cybersecurity and provides information of what research security offices need to consider in this risk category.

  • Airplane in the sky

    Foreign Travel Security

As a requirement of NSPM-33, research security offices must train their researchers on risks related to international travel. This course covers basic travel security topics and provides practical advice on improving personal safety while traveling for work (e.g., conferences, meetings, etc.).

The course also covers the areas related to research programs and data protection while traveling, including the recommendations to use a loaner laptop, physical security of devices, hotel data security, and other scenarios.

  • University

    Research Security Training

The NSPM-33 and CHIPS Act require research security programs to provide specific research security courses. This course satisfies that requirement by covering relevant topics to research security, including the importance of disclosing foreign research affiliations and relationships.

The course also provides scenarios to demonstrate research security cases that could lead to research being out of compliance.

  • Container Ship for Trading

    Export Control Training

This course reviews the basic export control requirements that research security offices must adopt as part of their overall risk mitigation program. Export control regulates the export of goods, software, and technology. Some items could potentially be useful for purposes that are contrary to the interest of the exporting country. These items are considered to be controlled.

  • Exam

    Final Knowledge Check

This course provides a pathway for principal investigators and other researchers to demonstrate their knowledge of research security and compliance issues related to the NSPM-33 guidelines and other federal requirements. Most researchers will be required to complete NSPM-33 research security courses at least once per year; however, some research institutions now require the courses to be completed every time a research grant application is submitted.

This knowledge check approach is an alternative to that process, reducing the research security training burden on researchers.
